About Us

Personal finance spreadsheet maker extraordinaire

Greetings from the entire staff here at An Uncommon Way to Wealth.

Our webmaster, chief editor, copywriter, graphical designer, product reviewer, marketing specialist, traffic analyzer, head chef, bottle washer, and errand boy all welcome you to our little corner of the web.

Okay, I confess…I, Sean, am 'us'…and did I mention 'head researcher'?

This project began around March of 2005. I had made a New Year's resolution to get our finances in order, and I was having a tough time of it. I couldn't find a budgeting system that worked for my wife and me, I didn't know anything about investing, and we had about $16,000 of debt to pay off. I don't know about you, but for me that was a call to action.

At first, I read every personal finance blog I could find on the Web. I spent hours a day reading about ways to save money, make money, budget, plan for retirement, and live frugally. My wife probably thought I had gone off the deep end. Eventually, it paid off - we're steadily reducing our debt, we have a budgeting method that is simple and easy to use, we're saving a very healthy amount of money for retirement, and we live below our means.

What I realized, though, is that most people just don't have an insane amount of time to invest in researching personal finance. They have other things in their lives that require their attention, like family and friends, and they don't have the time to invest in reading hours each day about some tip on how to save money on their cable bill.

That's where I come in. I've created this website to take the extra effort out of learning about personal finance. Want to know which budgeting system is the best? I've reviewed several, including the good and the bad, and I'll give you my honest opinion of each one. Want to know the best way to save for retirement? I've covered that as well.

The way I see it, being wealthy is about having enough money to be able to spend more time with your family, more time just…living life. Spend less time worrying about your personal finances, and more time enjoying your money, with the useful tools and tips at An Uncommon Way to Wealth.

Cheers and Happy Finances!

Sean Payne

Hi Sean,
I have counseled the rich for a fee and the poor for free and realized comprehensive financial planning was out of reach for the average earner. Consequently we have co-developed the first online consumer based comprehensive financial planning software. For a very low cost people can input their own information and receive a 60 page financial plan, which includes areas not previously covered by financial planners, including an emphasis on giving and relationships. eFinPLAN does not consist of planning calculators nor budgeting platforms like Mvelopes. There is no other platform like ours currently in existence.

After 6 months of development, we introduced this only a few days ago. I am now entering the marketing phase for our new business. I came across your website and was interested in a possible review of our software. Please checkout my website, and let me know your thoughts about this.
Thanks,
Kent Irwin

Sean,
After a couple of VERY frustrating hours trying to tweak my Microsoft Money program to bend to my needs, I discovered your very simple Excel spreadsheet Debt-Repayment calculator. It is really wonderful of you to provide this product to people free of charge and I really want to thank you for your efforts.

All the best,

Devin

hi Sean,

thanks so much for putting this information out there! (and it looks like there's still more to come!)

i'm wondering if there's any way you could post the formulas you used to make the excel spreadsheet (i'm particularly looking for the grocery price book) - i am on office 2008 and it doesn't allow macros (?) to run, so it won't do the click-in-the-drop-down-box thing that's so integral to your wonderful wonderful price book.

thanks for all of this!!

Devin,

Thanks for the compliment about the Debt Repayment Calculator. It's one of my favorites, because some people have a tough time getting out of debt without a good, solid plan. The Debt Repayment Calculator gives them that plan.

I'm glad to hear that it's working for you. If you know of anyone else who can use it, feel free to pass it on.

Sean

Heath,

I don't really have the formulas, per se, but the spreadsheets are editable. If there's a password locking the spreadsheet from editing, please use the Contact form to email me, and I'll be glad to give you the unlock password.

Anna

Hi Sean,
Love the site. My sister, mother of 8 (yes, you read that correctly) has twin 17 year old daughers in their junior year of high school. Both are talented, good grades, into sports, cheerleading, band, well..everything. As you can imagine, my sister has limited resources to get these kids to college. Any advice on where to look for free ways/scholarships/etc. to help her out? Thanks so much for all you do!

hi Sean,
Does your website or your thinking methods have anything to do with the book An uncommon way to wealth?

August 26, 2009

Leslie,

I got the idea for the website's name from a book by Victor D'Argent entitled "An Uncommon Way to Wealth". I've read and re-read it several times, so I would say my methods of thinking are somewhat influenced by it.

leslie

Thanks for getting back to me, Just recently got the book in a unusual way, read it now i'm curious about the original writer have you done any research on this? Know any thing about the book and its original philosophy? just curious -and by the way great web site i'm going to tell some people who could really use this, nice thing to do.

Leslie,

I only know that I got mine through the Ken Roberts Company when I bought "The Most Powerful Moneymaking Manual (and Course)". The Moneymaking Manual was a bust, although it did make some money for Mr. Roberts when I bought it. However, the book is a keeper.

As far as the author of the book goes, I don't know anything more about him. It may be that the story about the book is true…

your website could be good but is impossible to navigate. Im stuck trying to find frugle 101 and it doesnt exist.

take it in to a reputable web designer in your area to see what I mean.

you should also write short books, 50 pages or so, on personal finance and sell them for like $10 each. You would be surprised how many you can sell and its pretty much insta profit with little time invested.

I thought that your readers might be interested to know about my latest finding on the web. The future I think is online, a friend told me about http://www.myootd.org recently and there is no way back for me, I was never inspired to budget and manage my cash responsibly until I visited this free budgeting site and started to use it.

For the first time I truly am getting a handle on my debt reduction and seeing a nice light at the end of my personal financial tunnel. I think that motivation is as important as the tools to do the work, OOTD offers both.
